Territory of Slovakia belongs to the mild climatic zone. The climate is determined by a great variety of climatic conditions resulting from changing latitude, elevation differences and partly differences in continentality as well. The climate in Slovakia shows considerable variations, mainly due to the great elevation differences of land. Lowlands have generally a warm and fairly dry climate, e.g. in the Danubian Lowland with an average annual air temperature of about 10° C and 20° C in July. Contrary to that, the annual temerature averages only around -3,7° C atop of Lomnický štít in Vysoké Tatry Mts. The mean annual rainfall increases from approx. 500 mm in Danubian Lowland to about 2000 mm in Vysoké Tatry Mts..

Climate in hollows greatly depends on their elevation and on the mountains that encircle them. Lower situated southern hollows are substantially colder, while their humidity differs considerably. Hollows bordered by high ridges lie in a rain shadow (e. i. the lowest parts of the Poprad Hollow have the same overall annual rainfall as the lowlands, although they lie 500 m higher). Hollows are characterised by an enhanced incidence of temperature inversions, with fogs and lower cloudiness, particularly during late autumn and in winter.
