A. SCIENTIFIC EXCURSIONS: SUMMARY

For 2003, the Centre for Scientific Tourism in Slovakia has prepared an extensive, flexible and compared to 2002 also slightly modified excursion programme covering the following topics:

Natural History Tour: May 3 - 10, September 6 - 13, 2003

  • Natural history of the Western Carpathians (geology, soils, landscapes, vegetation, natural and semi-natural forests in all altitudinal vegetation zones)

Geology of the Klippen Belt: September 27 - October 4, 2003

  • Different types of bedrock and landscapes along the famous Carpathian Klippen Belt

Azonal Plant Communities: May 24 - 31, 2003

  • Interdependence between soils, vegetation, bedrock and relief; plant species with a narrow ecological tolerance bound  to certain types of West Carpathian biotopes, such as sands, karst, volcanic rock etc.

Along the Vertical Transect: July 5 - 12, 2003

  • Changes of the Carpathian vegetation (Pannonian and mountainous elements) as a function of altitude; from the Danube Lowland to the alpine environment of the High Tatras National Park

Primeval and Semi-Natural Forests: June 14 - 21, August 16 - 23, October 18 - 25, 2003

  • Species composition, growth patterns, autoregulation, autoreproduction and the overall homeostasis in the Carpathian climax forests that represent altitudinal vegetation zones typical of the Carpathians; legacy to the site-adopted forestry theory and practice

Natural Landscapes Management and Sustainability: July 26 - August 2, 2003

  • Development of  agriculture, forestry and tourism in natural landscapes, management of biosphere reserves, biodiversity protection
