CSTS delegation visits Prince's Garden

The history has come full circle. Two years after his visit to Slovakia, HRH The Prince of Wales, has graciously invited Dr. Viliam Pichler and Dr. Magdalena Sorokova from the Centre for Scientific tourism in Slovakia to visit his garden at Highgrove in Gloucestershire.

Highgrove, was purchased for him by the Duchy of Cornwall, the hereditary estate of the Prince of Wales. The Gloucestershire home had once belonged to the son of former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. When The Duchy of Cornwall bought Highgrove in 1980, the grounds were decidedly sparse. However, The Prince of Wales has been the central figure in the transformation of the grounds into a well-renowned organic garden over the past 20 years. It is not a grandiose area, but one of intimate beauty and private surroundings. Its tranquillity and beauty gave the visitors an insight into the Prince's sincere thoughts about the environment (www.princeofwales.gov.uk).

Drs. Pichler and Sorokova also inspected some reforestation schemes in the Yorkshire Dales National park and met Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust staff (www.ydmt.org). The mission of YMDT, whose Royal Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales, consists in supporting a truly sustainable development and ensuring the conservation of both natural and cultural heritage across the Dales. Upon invitation from YMDT's executive director, Mr. Ian Oag they planted Slovak elms (Ulmus glabra) at the YMDT's headquarters at Clapham. Drs. Pichler and Sorokova wrapped up they visit by a lecture on geo- and biodiversity in Slovakia and their conservation in Hawes followed up by a dinner kindly hosted by Mr. Roger Stott (the YMDT's former chair) and his wife Brenda, in the presence of Baroness of Richmond and writer Geoffrey Moorhouse.
