Excerpts from a letter sent to Dr. Pichler and his colleagues by Dr. Jean-Pierre Ribaut, former Head of the Division of Environment, Council of Europe, on the occasion of the book presentation on November 28, 2001 at the Royal castle in Zvolen, Slovakia:

"I would like to take this opportunity to underline the importance of this event and to encourage you to well preserve and manage these kind of natural relics, which will be under increasing pressure with man's development policy.

This policy means better and more roads, new areas for secondary homes, industries, leisure activities with the consequence that the natural sectors are regularly diminishing. However, the virgin forests play an essential function with their high and priceless biological diversity and the numerous ecological functions they assume.

We have destroyed all of them in Western Europe. Slovakia has the big chance to possess, with some other Central and Eastern European countries, some very important of these exceptional ecosystems. But this situation includes also the responsibility to protect them as they are of international value and are part of the "Common world heritage"...

Dear colleague, I wish you a successful celebration and congratulate you and all the persons, authorities, associations who have contributed to this event."

Dr Jean-Pierre Ribaut
Former Head of the Division of Environment
Council of Europe
Strasbourg, France

"I am pleased to write this preface to a book on Slovak primeval forests. As a matter of fact, it's quite extraordinary that so many impressive old growths of mighty oaks, beech, fir or spruce trees have been preserved right in the middle of Europe, in the country my grandparents came from. I hope, that Slovak forestry scientists, foresters, conservationists along with all people of good will see to that the primeval forests in this country will survive until the mankind - perhaps after colonising the Moon or Mars realises, how unlikely, different and unique every square meter of our Planet's surface is."

An excerpt from the Preface
written by EUGENE A. CERNAN
pilot of the Geminy 9 starship,
pilot of the lunar module of the Apollo 10 mission,
commander of the Apollo 17 starship,
to date the last man to stand on the Moon
