Mr. Keith Mott and party
(CST Slovakia - News)

Mr. Keith Mott and party

Updated: CSTS uses trains as an alternative transportation. You can watch three movie clips and screenshots from Mr. Keith Mott and party visit in Slovakia.

A group of ecologists and conservationists from Leeds, North Yorkshire and Devon were hosted by the Centre for Scientific Tourism in the early August. First they visited Polana World Biosphere Reserve. Jan Machava, a CSTS soil chemist informed them on soil properties in that region. He gave explanations about the allophane effect typical of soils that developed on rock containing volcanic glass. Interestingly, local soils feature bulk density values smaller than 0,8 g cm-3 i. e. they will float on the water surface. Further topics included the importance of dead wood for natural regeneration in spruce primeval forests and local geology. Explanations were given while walking through spruce primary forests on the rim of the erosive caldera of the Mt. Polana (1458 m a. s. l.).

A considerable portion of time was devoted to the study of fir - beech primeval forests. These stands are composed of specimens of extraordinary dimensions (height, BH thickness, girth) conditioned by a balanced nutrients content in the soils (cambisols) and sufficient precipitation. The party was also interested in visiting a wooden articular Lutheran church in Hronsek and the famous steam cave in the Sklene Teplice Spa. In fact, all group members insisted on taking a bath in the cave filled with hot mineral water (39 °C) and a massage afterwards. They also visited an ancient royal mining town of Banska Stiavnica.

The last day the party tried our new product - a train trip to the Dobsinska Ice Cave in the Slovak Paradise National Park followed by an adventurous hike through one of the splendid karstic gorges with wildly running water. All in all, both our guides and guests were sorry to separate after the wonderful time they had together.

Some comments...

"Thank you very much for taking such good care of us and taking us to so many amazing places. I thought the Czech Republic was lovely but Slovakia is stunning. You did very well to show us so much in only three days. I was very sorry to leave Slovakia and your company."
