CSTS to train
German students
Centre for Scientific Tourism in Slovakia has recently been approached by the
School of Forest Science and Resource Management at the Technical University
Munich, Germany, to provide internships for its selected students within the
Lenardo da Vinci programme. The internships will provide young professionals
with the opportunity to learn about our best practices in Forestry Pedagogy
and scientific transfer based on advanced learning tools and methods, such as
GPS and handheld-aided educational trails etc.

Our book praised by the Swiss – new edition announced
Informationsblatt Forschungsbereich WALD, a quarterly letter of the Swiss
Federal Research Institute WSL published a very favourable review of our book
“Slovak Primeval Foests – Diversity and Protection”. The book has been sold out
within a year but an extended, 400-page 2nd edition will appear in

„Slovak Elm Trees from Slanské Vrchy Mts" awarded at an
international movie festival in Germany
Centre for Scientific Tourism in Slovakia has been awarded a prize at the
International CIMEA Festival in Baden-Baden (Germany) for its movie „Slovak Elm
Trees from Slanské Vrchy Mts". Elms are known for being devastated and nearly
wiped out across Europe by the Dutch Elm Disease, though relatively large elms
populations have survived in parts of Slovakia, one of them showing a remarkable
resistance in an area that has evidently been exposed to the pest. You may view

Primeval Forests" sold out (August
2002)
The 1st edition of the "Slovak
Primeval Forests - Diversity and Protection" has been sold out.
We have sent hundreds of copies to the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France,
Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Luxembourg, Austria and Belgium and... >>> full

The book has also recently been awarded a prize by the Scientific section of
the Slovak Literature Fund. The awarding ceremony is to take place on
September 18, 2002 in Bratislava. A desk calendar featuring book's selected
pictures also received a prize awarded by the Association of Slovak
Journalists.

Centre
for Scientific Tourism in Slovakia visited by a prominent WWF member
On August 29-30, 2002 Centre for Scientific Tourism in Slovakia had the
privilege to prepare and carry through a scientific excursion through
selected Slovak primeval forests for Dr. Gustav Harmer and party. Dr. Gustav
Harmer, a member of the WWF's
International Board of Trustees has visited the beech forest in the
Vtacnik National Preserve as well as the yew forest in Plavno National
Preserve. He also discussed further co-operation with the Centre for
Scientific Tourism in promoting site-adapted forestry across Europe using
the Slovak expertise.

2002)
A brief overview of scientific research currently carried out by
forest soil hydrologists associated with the Centre for Scientific Tourism
in Slovakia. Parts: measurement of saturated and unsaturated hydraulic
conductivity through solute transport experiments, monitoring of
physiologically available soil water in sub-mountain beech forests,

Slovak
Primeval Forests get favourable reviews
Allgemeine Forszeitschrift – der Wald (11/2002), Germany's most
authoritative forestry journal has published Dr.
Gustav Harmer's review (gif) of our book SLOVAK
PRIMEVAL FORESTS – DIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION. Dr. Harmer has been a
most distinguished member of the WWF International Board of Trustees since
2000. The book is nearly sold out with some 12 copies left, but preparations
of a reviewed 2nd edition are under way. You can also read a review
by Dr. Jean-Pierre Ribaut (pdf), a renowned Swiss biologist and the
former chairman of the Nature Conservation Committee of the Council of
Europe.

New
video documents (May 2002)
CSTS has recently released a couple of new professional videos with an
English voice-over. One of them called Through the West Carpathians features
an excursion devoted to the study of Carpathians' natural history. The other
one – Poľana Biosphere Reserve becoming a new melting pot – summarizes
recent CSTS's environmental education and PR work. They both can be ordered
and obtained free of charge.

Technology
at the service of excursion members (March 2002)
The Centre for Scientific Tourism will start using a PDA aided
visualisation directly in the field during its 2002 scientific excursions.
Thus, natural history of selected sites can be presented in a very
illustrative manner by showing developments of their geology, geomorphology
