CSTS guided outdoor excursions

Day 1 (afternoon)

  • arrival of participants
  • facultative sightseeing of the towns of Bratislava or Komarno (Slovak feast, winesampling)

Day 2

  • floodplain forests, artificial flooding system (Gabčíkovo)
  • loess formations, Haplic Chernozem profile, explanation of soil conditions on the Slovak territory
  • famous dendrological collection in Mlyňany

Day 3

  • an oak (Quercus petraea) primeval forests; explanation of their structure, autoregulation and homeostasis (Stiavnické Vrchy Mts.)
  • characteristic features of the Slovak volcanic mountains, andosol profile, maple - beech natural forests
  • coin and mint museum in Kremnica, a royal mining town

Day 4

  • species composition and homeostasis in a well preserved fir-beech primeval forest, its structure and texture (Kremnické Vrchy Mts.)
  • mountain spruce forests, maple - spruce forests, beech - fir forests, vegetation zonation, remnants of Tertiary volcanism: erosive caldera, volcanic table, inverse relief, remains of andesite lava flows, agglomerate remains, lahar, andosol profile (Poľana)

Day 5

  • the structure of crystalline mountains in the West Carpathians; soil profiles (Nízke Tatry Mts.)
  • spruce (Picea abies) mountain primeval forest, forest upper boundary, alpine zone
  • luvisol featuring extremely thick cutans - layers of transported clay particles
  • unique gothic architecture, dinner

Day 6

  • karst plateaus; flat tableland surface, little differentiated and influenced by erosion; karst lake, ice cave, grike fields, sink holes; impact oft he agriculture on the local environment; famous Domica cave (Slovenský Kras)
  • karst ravines, limestone cliffs; inversion of vegetation zones, thermophilous vegetation; nature and landscape integrity protection issues

Day 7

  • alpine-type, glacier-modelled relief in the Vysoké Tatry National park
  • thermal hot springs, travertine cascades (Bešeňová)

Day 8 – departure

Note:

Evenings will be filled with lectures, talks, slide shows and video-projections on geology, soils, vegetation, fauna, forests, environmental problems and nature protection in the Slovak Republic.
